The Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (IHCC) proudly supports and applauds today’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court that the language of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits sex discrimination, applies to discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

In a 6-3 vote, the Supreme Court ruled that a landmark civil rights law protects gay and transgender workers from workplace discrimination including being fired, disciplined, or turned down from a job based on their gender identity or sexual orientation.

Our mission to foster Hispanic economic development and to create sustainable prosperity for the benefit of Illinois society – includes advocacy and a strong commitment towards opportunity, equity, and inclusivity.

Until today’s decision, it was legal in more than half of all U.S. states to fire workers for being gay, bisexual or transgender.

This vastly consequential decision permanently extends workplace protections to millions of people across the nation.

Equity is the catalyst to protect all Americans from discrimination. We know that many of our own members have experienced discrimination in many forms and are proud that this ruling will protect many Americans.

We stand against any act of discrimination whatsoever and support our LGBT community, which includes many Hispanic-Americans.

Discrimination in any form is bad for business.

Equity creates wealth in all communities and lifts up the overall economy.

We will rise by lifting others.
